Tax-Free Holiday Weekend for Purchasing Emergency Supplies April 22-24

It’s that time of year again, to start thinking about emergency preparedness. Did you know that hurricane season starts June 1? Knowing how important emergency preparedness is, we invite you to evaluate your emergency supplies and possibly take advantage of the upcoming tax-free holiday weekend.

On April 22-24, an assortment of emergency supply items will be eligible for purchase, tax-free! Also, there is also no limit to the number of qualifying items you can purchase. Please refer to the list below for assistance:

Less than $3,000:

  • Portable generators

Less than $300:

  • Hurricane shutters
  • Emergency ladders

Less than $75

  • Batteries, single or multipack (AAA cell, AA cell, C cell, D cell, 6 volt or 9 volt)
  • First aid kits
  • Fuel containers
  • Ground anchor systems and tie-down kits
  • Hatchets
  • Axes
  • Mobile telephone batteries and mobile telephone chargers
  • Non-electric coolers and ice chests for food storage
  • Non-electric can openers
  • Portable self-powered light sources (including battery operated)
  • Portable self-powered radios (including battery operated) - including two-way and weather band radios
  • Reusable and artificial ice products
  • Smoke detectors, fire extinguishers and carbon monoxide detectors
  • Tarps and other plastic sheeting

Supplies that do not qualify for tax exemption:

  • Batteries for automobiles, boats and other motorized vehicles
  • Camping stoves
  • Camping supplies
  • Chainsaws
  • Plywood
  • Extension ladders
  • Stepladders
  • Tents
  • Repair or replacement parts for emergency preparation supplies
  • Services performed on, or related to, emergency preparation supplies

Delivery and shipping charges:

During the holiday weekend, when buying the emergency supply items online additional charges are considered part of the sales tax (such as delivery, shipping, etc). This means if you exceed the allowed limit, you will be charged tax on the entirety of your purchase.
